Daufuskie Island, South Carolina, 1952

These are my first serious pictures, made at the age of eighteen with my first Leica on a small island off the coast of South Carolina. Most of the people in these pictures are descendants of the original slaves on the island plantation. They made their living as gatherers of oysters and crabs. The island is now a resort development. The pictures have never been published. Number of pictures in original edit: 31
